Or is this the Mystic Portal?

Only joking we didn't really swim - well would you?  We had to climb over the hill that the tunnel goes through.  We had to follow a road to start with and then a footpath.  We were beginning to wonder if we had gone the wrong way but luckily a nice young couple with a baby in a pushchair told us we would get to the canal if we "kept going quite a long way".
This is the southern portal which was built of red brick.  The tunnel is the third longest navigable one currently in Britain at 3076 yards (sorry our book hasn't gone metric!) and it takes about half an hour to go through it by boat.  We didn't fancy it much but at least the boats these days have engines and so "legging" is not necessary (that is when people had to lie on top of the boat and use their feet on the roof of the tunnel to push it through).
