We are Sailing

Well actually not yet as there is no boat from Christchurch!
From Christchurch we drove up the east coast to Kaikoura, known for whale watching and dolphin sightings, we didn't see any. It was however a lovely drive (apart fom being nearly knocked off the road by a mad lorry driver!) The Kaikoura peninsula is beautiful, mountains behind and the sea in front. We drove to the tip and had a walk around to Blue Bay.

After we drove to our campsite, just across the road from the beach and cooked a steak which we ate in the evening sunshine (we bet you all feel very sorry for us).
The following day we drove on through the Malborough wine distrrict and decided to do a wine tasting at Highfield! Those in the know will know that this the same name as the surgery that Catherine works at, we did not know that they owned a winery!

That evening we ended up at Havelock, famous for it's geen lipped mussels

...and they were delicious.
The following day we drove to Picton. Picton is our departure point from the south island to the north. We had a walk around "The Snout", a peninsula out into Queen Charlotte Sound and a great place for a walk.

The following morning we boarded our ferry for the three and a half hour sail to Wellington (now we are sailing).

We arrived in Wellington and being mildly averse to capital cities we drove north on a fairly boring road and at last arrived in beautiful countryside and parked at Vinegar Hill campsite, a very cheap campsite, surrounded by a river, cliffs and sunshine, there were only three other campers there!

And so ended our first day in the north. Soon we were off to Mordor and Mount Doom!
